Watch Beck, Fiona Apple Cover California Classics at Tribute Concert
Beck, Fiona Apple, Jakob Dylan and Cat Power anchored an all-star tribute to classic California acts of the Sixties like the Byrds, Beach Boys and Buffalo Springfield at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles Monday night.
Per a Los Angeles Times report, Dylan served as the de facto leader of the aptly titled Echo in the Canyon show, which was loosely pegged to the 50th anniversary of the Byrds’ seminal debut, Mr. Tambourine Man (that album’s title track was, of course, written by Dylan’s father).
The younger Dylan dutifully paired with Beck for two particularly shimmering Byrds covers, which were captured by an audience member. The pair traded vocals and crafted simple, stirring harmonies on “Goin’ Back,” which they followed with an equally faithful rendition of “The Bells of Rhymney.”
Dylan also teamed with Cat Power for a steady rolling rendition of “You Showed Me,” written by the Byrds’ Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark, but recorded by the Turtles. The pair also delivered a breezy, soulful cover of the Association’s “Never My Love.”
Other snippets from the concert have surfaced online as well, including Fiona Apple‘s chilling performances of the Beach Boys’ “In My Room” and the Byrds’ “It Won’t Be Wrong.” Dylan, Beck, Regina Spektor and Jade Castrinos — a former member of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros — also took the stage together for the Mamas and the Papas’ “Monday Monday.”
For those itching to see the full songs — and the rest of the set — the concert was filmed for a video release that will accompany the Echo in the Canyon studio compilation. The LP is scheduled to arrive in 2016 and will feature all the same musicians; Dylan and Cat Power’s version of “You Showed Me” is available to stream on SoundCloud, as well.
