See Lionel Richie, Dave Grohl Bond Over Muffins
Lionel Richie recently sat down with Dave Grohl for a SiriusXM Town Hall interview from Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood, home of Richie’s “All the Hits” residency. The chat included the singer’s thoughts on retirement, Motown and a story about the time Richie sent the Foo Fighters frontman a surprise gift. “I’m telling you, it was the biggest muffin basket I have ever seen,” Grohl said.
Both the Foo Fighters and Richie were recruited to perform at the 2015 Glastonbury Festival; however, after Grohl broke his leg in Sweden, the Foo Fighters were forced to cancel their appearance at the legendary fest. While recovering, Grohl was besieged by “Get Well” cards, flowers and an enormous muffin basket.
“I didn’t know who it was from, I didn’t read the card or anything,” Grohl said. “So I went back to my bed and I got a text maybe a few hours later that said, ‘Lionel Richie called and wants to know if you got the muffin basket.'” Richie explained he sent the gift to express his sadness that he wasn’t going to be sharing a bill with Foo Fighters, a band he looked forward to seeing live for the first time.
To thank Richie for the gesture, Grohl returned the favor by bringing a cauldron stuffed with muffins out onto the stage.
Later during the Sirius XM chat, which first aired on satellite radio on May 6th, Richie discussed retirement (“Retire from what?”) and performed his classic “Easy.”
