Zayn Malik: ‘I Never Really Wanted to Be in One Direction’
UPDATE: Zayn Malik has revealed the track list for his solo debut Mind of Mine. See the track list below.
Former One Direction singer Zayn Malik gave has first on-camera interview as a solo artist with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, set to air in full Thursday afternoon. Malik will release his debut single, “Pillowtalk,” on Friday along with its official music video.
“I always wanted to go, from the first year really,” Malik bluntly states while sitting next to Lowe in stadium bleachers. “I never really wanted to be in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time.”
Later, he echoes the same sentiments he revealed in his Fader cover story about not feeling connected with the “direction” the boy band’s music was heading in. “I realized I couldn’t put any input in,” he says. “I couldn’t give my opinion on this or that because it didn’t fit the grain of what we were as a band and what we represented.”
Malik has promised a more R&B sound from his solo LP and imminent single, whereas One Direction’s recently released Made in the A.M. saw the pop group lean towards a folk-rock, Seventies FM sound. “That’s not music I would listen to,” Malik told The Fader. “I want to make music that I think is cool shit. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for.”
