Watch Lera Lynn’s Mysterious ‘Shape Shifter’ Video
Holed up in a Nashville recording studio over the winter months, Lera Lynn recorded this year’s Resistor without session musicians, backup singers or outside collaborators. Only her co-producer Joshua Grange was allowed through the studio doors. The two played every instrument themselves, resulting in an album that replaces the folk-rock sweeps and swells of her 2014 breakthrough The Avenues with pruned indie-rock and spacey Americana.
Appropriately, Lynn and Grange are the only faces we see if the new music video for “Shape Shifter.” Released nearly four months after the lead single first hit the internet, the clip finds the pair performing the off-kilter, anti-love song with cool detachment. One minute, they’re strumming electric guitars on a vintage couch. The next, they’re performing the song in an alleyway, with Grange all but invisible in the murky background. It’s a stunning clip, focused more on mood and mystery than any sort of linear plot, and its camerawork — a back-and-forth between slow pans and quick, herky-jerky cuts — mirrors the unexcited pace of the music itself. Watch the video, which was directed by Karen Freed and co-produced by Lynn herself, above.
Lynn will mount a brief summer tour beginning with a June 28th performance at Nashville music store Grimey’s and including stops in Memphis, Washington, DC and Rough Trade in Brooklyn, New York.
