Watch Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato Talk Awkward Teenage Songwriting
One week before launching their joint Future Now tour, former Disney peers Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato reminisced about their adolescence on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Lovato dished on one early, awkward songwriting inspiration: Jonas’ brother and former bandmate Joe.
“I was writing my first album, and I was writing a song called ‘Gonna Get Caught,'” Lovato said, noting that Joe “burned” her at the “tender age of 15.” “[Joe] was in the room. We were all writing together. And he was like, ‘Well, maybe it has a happy ending, ya know?’ And I was like, ‘No! I think he gets caught and everyone sees that he’s a heartbreaker.’ Nick was like, ‘Why don’t we just write the chorus?'”
Lovato also revealed her complicated childhood feelings for Barney, the purple dinosaur star of kids show Barney & Friends, on which she scored her first gig at age eight. “Barney was actually very attractive inside the suit,” the singer gushed. “I’ve always gone for older guys, so even when I was younger, I thought the guy in the suit was hot.” A confused Colbert cracked, “Barney himself is like 92 million years old or something like that – that is an older guy.”
Jonas also performed a falsetto-heavy version of suave, steel drum-sampling new single, “Close,” from his second solo LP, Last Year Was Complicated.
