Inside Chris Stapleton’s Grammy Night: Ram Report
“It’s a strange thing to show up and have the ticket for Row 1, Seat 1, and your rowmates are Stevie Wonder and Lady Gaga,” Chris Stapleton tells Rolling Stone Country of he and wife Morgane’s Grammy Awards experience. “It’s very strange to be in the middle of, and wonderful, all at the same time.”
Stapleton won a pair of Grammys at the February 15th ceremonies, one for Best Country Album for his debut LP Traveller, the other for his performance of the title track. The singer-songwriter also took part in a tribute to the late B.B. King, with Bonnie Raitt and Gary Clark Jr. It was a fiery highlight of the broadcast, but for Stapleton, it prohibited him from seeing Lady Gaga’s David Bowie medley. He did catch the duet between James Bay and Tori Kelly, however, making him a new fan.
“I really enjoyed them. That was really, really good,” Stapleton says. “I wasn’t familiar with either one of their music, because I am completely an idiot on pop culture.”
While Stapleton may claim to be in the dark on pop culture, he’s quickly becoming a part of it: on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel, he participated in a laugh-out-loud skit that found him singing “The Words You Hate.”
