Apocalypse How: See Zombies Take Over in ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Trailer
A terrifying first look at the sixth season of The Walking Dead was only the appetizer for zombie fans at San Diego’s Comic-Con Friday: AMC also unveiled the extended trailer for the spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead, which will premiere August 23rd. While our Walking Dead heroes are fighting for survival in the Southeast, Fear takes place in Los Angeles in the days preceding and following the zombie outbreak.
The Walking Dead didn’t go into much detail about the apocalyptic weeks after the “walkers” first arrived; Rick Grimes simply wakes up from a coma in an Atlanta-area hospital and zombies have already taken over. In Fear the Walking Dead, we see the initial outbreak through the eyes of a Los Angeles family’s fight for survival. What starts with a rash of children calling out sick from school and slaughtered junkies eventually spreads throughout Los Angeles, sparking the zombie epidemic. “When civilization ends, it ends fast,” the trailer ominously says in closing.
At the series’ Comic-Con panel, Dave Erickson, who co-created the show with The Walking Dead mastermind Robert Kirkman, talked about Fear the Walking Dead‘s place in the franchise’s timeline. “Rick was out for four to five weeks, and this is two, three, four weeks of that time,” Erickson said. “Even when we eventually get to the end of season, we’re still not necessarily caught up.”
Fear the Walking Dead stars Cliff Curtis, Deadwood actress Kim Dickens and Ruben Blades. Like Season One of The Walking Dead, which eventually became the most successful series in AMC’s history, the spinoff will arrive with an introductory six-episode season. According to Den of Geek, Fear the Walking Dead has already been picked up for a second season ahead of its August 23rd premiere.
