Jamie Lynn Spears on ‘Flirty’ New Music: The Ram Report
Jamie Lynn Spears often has to stop and remind herself that she’s just 25 years old. That’s likely something easy to forget, as she’s a wife and mother and has been in the entertainment business for almost 15 years. But embracing her youthful side has resulted in a songwriting shift that’s led to the singer-songwriter showing a different musical side, as well.
Spears’ latest single is the flirtatious “Sleepover,” which is about treating the beginning of a relationship with long-term goals in mind — and not just a one-night stand. The Louisiana native wrote it on a girls’ trip to Destin, Florida, with Grammy-winning songwriter Liz Rose (Taylor Swift, Little Big Town) and Tina Parol.
“They said, ‘We have this idea we want to pitch to you: ‘Sleepover.” And at first I thought they meant girls having a sleepover, pillow fights. . . and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I hope that’s not what they mean,'” Spears recalls. “And then they explained it to me and I was like, ‘Yes! I love it!'”
Rose, Parol and Spears sent a tape of the song to producer Corey Crowder — with no musical accompaniment other than their own harmonies. He then gave “Sleepover” the melodies, instrumentation and production that took it to the next level. Spears was so thrilled with the results that she decided “Sleepover” should set the tone for her next project — though she’s not sure yet whether that will be an EP or full album.
“I really understand where I am as an artist and what I want my next chapter to sound like,” she says. “To embrace that fun, young side of myself is a little harder for me. So that’s something I really tackled: embracing the flirty, softer side of myself. . . What we can embrace as women is that we can be mothers, a wife and still be flirty and sexy and confident, as well.”
An inside look at the 25-year-old as a mother, wife, songwriter and singer will come June 26th when TLC airs her documentary, Jamie Lynn Spears: When the Lights Go Out.
