Watch Seth Meyers, Anderson Cooper Laugh About Pissing Off Trump
Donald Trump‘s enemies list grows larger by the hour, but Late Night host Seth Meyers is an old pro at pissing off the GOP hopeful – a fact he cheerfully discussed with CNN’s Anderson Cooper during Tuesday’s Late Night. “Your show has basically been Donald Trump tonight so far,” Cooper tells the host. “I gotta be honest,” Meyers responds. “Last night, same thing.”
Meyers has been Trump’s enemy since he roasted the real estate mogul at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump was the first person to tweet “congratulations” at the comedian: “Seth Meyers is a loser,” Cooper says, doing a Trump impression. “He garbles his words. How did he get a show?” “The thing he always says about me is that I have marbles in my mouth,” Meyers says, “which is so great because it’s something that a 1950s bully would say.”
While Cooper enjoys cracking a cheap joke or two, he emphasizes the amazement – and weird form of respect – he has for Trump. “I think Donald Trump defies the laws of political gravity at this point,” he says. “Donald Trump has the money to back up whatever he wants to do, and he’s tapped into something very powerful.
“I actually like talking to Donald Trump,” he continues, pointing out that – unlike many candidates – he doesn’t arrive to interviews with a huge entourage. “He says what’s on his mind, whether you agree with him or not, and he attacks you in the process, which is always entertaining.”
Meyers and Cooper also joke about Trump’s tendency to tweet angry messages at odd hours. “Right now, he’s probably tweeting, ‘That Seth Meyers confirmed it: He’s a loser,” Cooper says. “You see that loser Cooper on that loser Meyers’ show?'”
“He’s definitely taken the edge off of ‘loser,’ the host says. “because at some point, you look at who he’s called ‘losers,’ and it’s great company.”
Earlier in the show, Meyers led a bit imagining what Trump is doing during relentless his phone interviews. “I picture him standing on top of the Trump Tower, looking over the city that he has built,” says Late Night writer Connor O’Malley. “He’s holding the phone to his ear, and he’s just whizzing like crazy on all the garbage people walking on the streets below. And he’s laughing. Oh, yes – he’s laughing like a madman.”
