Trump Can’t Tell the Difference Between Himself and Bernie Sanders
The highest praise Donald Trump can give a person is to say that person is a lot like Donald Trump. That’s the compliment Trump unwittingly paid Bernie Sanders, the candidate who could be his rival in the general election, Wednesday night.
Trump sat down with Morning Joe co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough for a “town hall” ahead of Saturday’s Republican primary in South Carolina. Toward the end of the interview, Brzezinski described a candidate to Trump.
“The candidate is considered a political outsider by all the pundits. He’s tapping into the anger of the voters, delivers a populist message. He believes everyone in the country should have health care. He advocates for hedge fund managers to pay higher taxes. He’s drawing thousands of people at his rallies, and bringing in a lot of new voters to the political process and he’s not beholden to any super PAC,” Brzezinski said, as Trump nodded along thoughtfully. “Who am I describing?”
“You’re describing Donald Trump,” he replied.
No. No, she wasn’t.
Trump sputtered a bit, and tried to walk back his statement, before conceding that they had similar positions on trade. “The problem is he’s not going to be able to do anything about it,” Trump said, of Sanders. “He doesn’t understand it. He doesn’t understand what’s happening.”
If Trump and Sanders do end up going head-to-head in the general election, expect to see this clip played on loop for months.
