Chance the Rapper, Donnie Trumpet Celebrate ‘Surf’ Anniversary With Unreleased Track
Saturday marked the one-year anniversary of the release of Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment‘s Surf, the collective’s acclaimed LP that heavily featured Chance the Rapper. To celebrate the occasion, Trumpet unveiled “The First Time,” a seamless, 10-minute mix of unreleased material from the Surf sessions.
“This is a collection of unused Surf pieces, an ode to the era,” Nico “Donnie Trumpet” Segal wrote on SoundCloud. “Thank you to everyone who’s still listening and growing with the music.” In addition to Chance, who pops up a handful of times over “The First Time” medley, the track also features Ady Suleiman, J.P. Floyd, Dustin Green and Cam Obi.
“The First Time” further fuses the collective’s exploration of free jazz, R&B and hip-hop across its stunning, shapeshifting 10 minutes. Like Surf, which placed Number Four on Rolling Stone‘s 40 Best Rap Albums of 2015 and Number 24 on the 50 Best Albums of 2015 lists, “The First Time” is available to both stream and download for free.
Chance also celebrated the one-year anniversary of Donnie Trumpet’s LP by wishing his followers a “Happy #SurfDay” on Twitter. Chance and the Social Experiment have since reunited on the rapper’s standout new mixtape Coloring Book, with the group listed as producer on eight of the album’s 14 tracks.
