Watch Jon Hamm Defend ‘Worst Taste’ in Music to Chris Gethard
“I have the worst taste in music in the world,” actor Jon Hamm says to comedian Chris Gethard ahead of the Season Two finale of The Chris Gethard Show. Rolling Stone asked the duo backstage what kind of music is on their regular rotation. “I like whatever’s mainstream,” Hamm said, improbably naming ZZ Top.
Hamm said growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, classic rock bands with braun and grit were the default choice. “I grew up in the kind of place where 911 is like … a service people use if your cat is stuck in a tree,” he said, remembering the absurdity of seeing Public Enemy at their peak play a small town in Boone County, Missouri.
Gethard, sitting opposite Hamm in a Smiths shirt (concealing his two Morrissey/Smiths tattoos) asked Hamm if he had any interest in anything other than mainstream. “I’m obsessed with the Smiths,” said Gethard. Hamm said that he never appreciated the Smiths, but demonstrated that he was still keenly aware of the Manchester sound. “The more you ignore me, the closer I will get,” said Hamm, narrowing his eyes at Gethard, who replied:
“I could probably spend 45 minutes just telling you how that specific song resonates with me.”
