See Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s Front-Seat Duet of ‘The Fighter’
Keith Urban has unveiled an unofficial video for “The Fighter,” one of the standout tracks from his adventurous Ripcord LP (released May 6th) that features the singer/guitarist in a duet with Carrie Underwood. But for this version, filmed within the confines of his SUV, Urban is joined by his wife, award-winning actress – and sometime singer – Nicole Kidman. [Watch below.]
“Oh my god, I love this song,” Kidman enthuses as the playback of the track begins. “Good, thank goodness,” Urban says with a smile before beginning to sing along with it. In spite of an early technical glitch, the flirtatious performance continues with the couple grooving along, while Kidman provides some Oscar-caliber pantomime during Underwood’s vocal parts on the R&B-inspired tune.
Urban, who co-wrote and produced the tune with songwriter-producer busbee, looks at Ripcord‘s varied landscape as a natural progression of his approach to production, telling Rolling Stone Country, “I’ve been doing demos at home of my stuff, ever since I was a kid. Even before I bought a multi-track, I bought two cassette decks and would play onto one, then press play, then sing along with it into the next one. I’d put my voice up next to the microphone on the cassette desk and add my harmonies, then play that back [into the other cassette deck] and add another harmony. That’s how I started cheap-ass multi-tracking.”
Earlier this week, Urban celebrated the Ripcord album launch with a free, lunchtime concert outside Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, drawing an estimated crowd of more 10,000, with some traveling from as far away as Alaska for the hour-long set.
