Watch Ice Cube Bring Out N.W.A, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar at Coachella
A week after Ice Cube fell a Dr. Dre short of an N.W.A reunion during his first Coachella set, the rapper managed to corral all of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted group’s surviving members – MC Ren, DJ Yella and Dre – for his Saturday night gig at the fest’s second weekend. After Ren, Yella and Cube performed “Straight Outta Compton” together, Cube asked, “Is there a doctor in the motherfucking house?” Dre then emerged.
Despite N.W.A being back onstage together, Dre’s appearance included performances of “Still D.R.E.” and Tupac Shakur’s “California Love,” but no N.W.A material. Earlier in the concert, Ice Cube also welcomed Lil Eazy-E to the stage to deliver his father’s classic “Boyz-n-the-Hood.”
However, the sort of-N.W.A reunion wasn’t the only surprise Cube had planned for the Indio, California gig: To close out his set, Cube brought out N.W.A disciple Kendrick Lamar to perform his To Pimp a Butterfly standout “Alright.”
“I’ve got some tricks up my sleeves,” Ice Cube said in January of his Coachella gigs. “I’m gonna try to bring the members of N.W.A together. Give everybody a little history lesson on Ice Cube and N.W.A, West Side Connection, everything I’ve been doing over the years.” Cube’s first weekend performance featured Ren, Yella, Common and Snoop Dogg, while the second weekend – in addition to N.W.A, Lil Eazy-E and Lamar – boasted his Westside Connection cohort WC (“Why We Thugs”) and the Game (“Don’t Trip”).
