Watch Tegan and Sara Perform Lovesick Single ‘Boyfriend’ on ‘Fallon’
Tegan and Sara debuted their pulsating new single “Boyfriend” Tuesday on The Tonight Show. The duo harmonized atop tinny percussion about the pain of secret relationships.
The performance came one day after the band’s May 9th show at New York City’s Le Poisson Rouge, which capped off a trio of American dates. Tegan and Sara will commence a 40-date, headlining North American tour on September 9th in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
“Boyfriend” is the lead single from Tegan and Sara’s eighth studio album, Love You to Death, out June 3rd. Last month, the duo unveiled the track’s lighthearted video, which finds the sisters satirizing at the glamour of a pop video shoot.
Singer-songwriter Sara Quin told Rolling Stone that “Boyfriend” emerged through a conscious challenge to write more straightforward pop. Producer Greg Kurstin encouraged the band to “re-approach the instrumentation” to find the right version. “He had to part that cloud for me,” Quin said. “I was stuck on my original arrangement, but then it was suddenly like, ‘Oh shit, this could be a single.'”
