Watch Weezer Spoof Tinder in Goofy ‘Go Away’ Video
“Cold-hearted girl / Don’t hurt me like this anymore,” Rivers Cuomo croons on “Go Away,” a surfy sing-along from Weezer‘s 2014 LP, Everything Will Be Alright in the End. The track’s goofy video finds the frontman in that rejected mindset as he attempts to woo guest singer Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast by cycling through a series of outlandish profile pics on a Tinder-like dating app, “Winder.”
The clip, directed by Brendan Walter and Greg Yagolnitzer, opens with Cuomo posing as a dumpster-diving punk while guitarist Brian Bell snaps a photo. A disgusted Cosentino swipes left – and denies all the singer’s subsequent guises: a Benjamins-flauting businessman, a booze-swigging frat guy (with a baseball cap that reads “COCKS”), a record store hipster attempting to DJ-scratch a vinyl copy of Weezer‘s The Blue Album and a clueless surfer. “Stupid boy / You keep on begging, but I won’t let you in,” Cosentino sings, outlining the rejection.
But Cuomo has one more trick up his sleeve, recruiting drummer Patrick Wilson to steal Cosentino’s purse as she walks down the street. Cuomo swoops in to save the day, recalling his faux-heroic moves and earning a hug for his trouble.
Everything Will Be Alright in the End, Weezer’s ninth LP, was celebrated as a return-to-form for the veteran alt-rockers. The album is comprised of three sections – one (“Belladonna”) of “classic girl songs,” one (“The Panopticon Artist”) about the band’s relationship with their fans and a third (“Patriarchia”) about Cuomo’s complicated relationship with his father.
“I wanted to make a complex, classic album,” Cuomo told Rolling Stone.
