Watch Stephen Colbert Send Off Triumphant Third-Place Finisher Marco Rubio
With each candidate’s exit from the 2016 presidential race, Stephen Colbert revives the Late Show‘s “Hungry for Power Games” to bid farewell to the losing “tributes.” Following a disappointing turnout in Florida, where the GOP vote sided heavily with Donald Trump, Colbert told his audience, “Florida senator, and boy whose birthday party your parents made you attend, Marco Rubio has joined the ranks of the fallen.”
Prior to the big Tuesday primaries, what had been a crowded field of candidates – think back to Lindsey Graham, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina and Lincoln Chafee – was wilted down to just six candidates. “They’re like the Beatles, but there are six of them and they’re all Ringo,” Colbert joked.
However, only five of them escaped Tuesday to campaign another day, as Rubio announced he was suspending his candidacy. “Loyal citizens, this is a major turning point in our games, as Rubio was the last tribute fighting on behalf of the establishment of capital city,” Colbert said. “He was supposed to become the Jeb Bush people liked; instead he just became the Jeb Bush. Please clap.”
Aside from his memorable name-calling battles with Donald Trump and the debate where he kept repeating himself, “Marco leaves us after a string of triumphant third-place victories, but was blindsided by Tuesday’s shocking second-place defeat in Florida,” Colbert said. “So for the record, Florida votes ‘yes’ on Jimmy Buffett, ‘yes’ on releasing pythons into toilets, on Marco Rubio… no thanks.”
