Hear Amy Lee’s Haunting Cover of U2’s ‘With or Without You’
Evanescence‘s Amy Lee turns U2‘s anthemic, arena rock ballad “With or Without You” into a haunting, minimalist rock tune in the latest installment of her covers series.
Lee’s take on the U2 classic follows her inaugural cover of Portishead’s “It’s a Fire.” On her latest, Lee turns the massive rock song into a dark, synth-heavy industrial track. She pairs her version with a black-and-white video — similar to the treatment for her self-released video on the Portishead tune — that includes sparse images of Lee posing by foliage and recording in her home studio.
“Sometimes I dream in music,” Lee wrote in a Facebook post. “The dark version of U2’s immortal song was playing in my head as I woke up one morning. I was lingering in that half-awake, half-asleep place, with no images — just darkness, this song and huge emotions. As I was becoming conscious I kept thinking ‘don’t let it go, don’t forget!’ And I went straight upstairs and laid down the synth.”
Lee will reunite with Evanescence this month for three U.S. tour dates and a headlining spot at Ozzfest Japan, but she revealed to Rolling Stone last month that the band currently has no plans to release new music together. The singer said she had solo material of her own she plans on releasing soon.
