Watch Atlanta Morning Show’s Clever Tribute to Phife Dawg
The hip-hop community and music fans aren’t the only ones mourning the death of Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor Wednesday as actors, baseball teams and even morning news programs are remembering the influential rapper. In a clever tribute to the quotable lyricist, WSB-TV’s Mark Arum masterfully weaved some of Phife Dawg’s greatest rhymes into his morning commute traffic report, turning gridlock on Atlanta highways into a fitting tribute for the Tribe Called Quest rapper.
Among the lines Arum stuffs into his Phife-quoting traffic report are “Coming with more hits than the Braves and the Yankees,” My track record’s longer than a DC-20 aircraft” (“Award Tour”), “One for the treble, two for the bass” (“Oh My God”) and “Tell your mother, tell your father, send a telegram” (“Check the Rhime”).
However, while the “Award Show” line “Ludicrously speedy, or infectious with the slow-mo” seems perfectly suited for a traffic report, Arum’s Phife Dawg tribute loses minor points for quoting a Q-Tip lyric.
