See Little Big Town, Pharrell Williams Team for Groovy ‘C’mon’
Grand Ole Opry members Little Big Town exercised one of the perks of Opry membership Tuesday night: the chance to introduce a special guest to the audience. The “Girl Crush” singers surprised attendees with an appearance from songwriter-producer Pharrell Williams (“Happy”), who joined the quartet on “C’mon,” one of the songs from their collaborative LP Wanderlust.
Group member Kimberly Schlapman giddily introduced the ubiquitous musician, who was making his Opry debut, by telling the crowd, “I am so excited because we have a big ole treat for you special people tonight.” Looking every bit the Music City tourist in a camouflage ball cap and tie-dyed “Nashville” t-shirt, Williams took his place at a snare drum behind the foursome as Karen Fairchild said, “How ’bout we sing a song for y’all that Pharrell wrote and that we just recorded? He’s from Virginia and he loves country music.”
“C’mon” is a groovy, doo-wop-influenced number that spotlights the group’s tight, playful harmony and hints at the more experimental direction in which they’ve taken Wanderlust.
“[The album] is the result of an incredible friendship and chemistry we have with Pharrell Williams,” Fairchild said when the project was announced last month. “What started out as one writing session a few months ago turned into multiple writing sessions, as well as back and forth trips from Nashville to Los Angeles. When the songs started coming together, we realized it was too special to not share with our fans. Pharrell loves country music and is a huge fan of harmony. That shared passion and appreciation took us on a creative journey we had no idea would happen.”
Wanderlust will be released Friday, June 10th.
