“Leaves weren’t the only thing falling,” Caleb Caudle sings in “Carolina Ghost,” a retrospective song that acts as a Valentine to both his significant other and the picturesque landscape of the Tar Heel State in fall. The title track to his new album has the singer-songwriter waxing poetic on real-life lessons about love that have been passed down from one generation to the next.
“I wrote ‘Carolina Ghost’ while me and my fiancé were cruising along the Blue Ridge parkway last fall. It just came to me and I wrote down a bunch of lines on my phone, then put it all together when I got home the next day,” Caudle tells Rolling Stone Country. “I really wanted my parents to be in the video — just footage of them sharing a day in the mountains. After so many years together, they still genuinely love each other, and I knew it would show on screen. I think there’s a freedom in the stability of a relationship. Until I met my fiancé, I was missing that in my life. But I’ve always seen it in my parents and in that way, now, I can relate to them — just finding someone who you can trust and who accepts you, faults and all.”
In the video, directed by Justin Reich, the song’s vivid imagery comes to life courtesy of Caudle’s parents. . . along with performance scenes framed by the Carolina pines.
In addition to his family and bride-to-be, the musician’s newfound sobriety — coupled with a move from New Orleans back to his North Carolina hometown – provided inspiration for Carolina Ghost‘s 10 tracks. Released in February, the album is a pedal steel-laced mix of modern Americana meets Eighties country. It was released last month via This Is American Music and has since topped Amazon’s Alt-Country/Americana albums chart.
