Flashback: See Sheryl Crow, Dixie Chicks Cover ‘Honky Tonk Women’
Fifteen years ago this month, the Lifetime network aired its inaugural Women Rock: Girls & Guitars concert special. Organized to draw attention to Breast Cancer Awarness Month, the special featured solo and group performances from Wynonna, Cyndi Lauper, Sheryl Crow, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart and more.
One year later, another all-star lineup congregated at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, as the second annual event spotlighted a return from Crow, along with first-timers the Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Pat Benatar, Nelly Furtado, Mary J. Blige and Texas-born singer Shea Seger.
Harris, Chapman and the Chicks converged for a touching version of Patty Griffin’s “Mary,” the Chicks’ Natalie Maines and Blige delivering a show-stopping take on the Etta James classic “At Last,” and the Dixie Chicks offered a rendition of the Eagles’ “Take It to the Limit.” But the ensemble pieces didn’t stop there, as all the participants took the stage for a rollicking version of the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women.”
With Crow tackling the first verse and Benatar belting out the second, the Chicks’ Emily Robison (now Strayer) and Martie Maguire handled the solo instrumental bits on Dobro and fiddle respectively. The credits roll as the singers and instrumentalists (including Chapman adding more cowbell) bring the song — and the special itself — to a rousing conclusion.
In 2002, the third annual special aired on Lifetime and was highlighted by Lee Ann Womack teaming with Gloria Estefan to perform the country singer’s mega-hit “I Hope You Dance.”
