Krist Novoselic Talks Bernie Sanders, Kurt Cobain Dreams
Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic appeared on former MTV VJ Kennedy’s Fox Business show this week to talk about grunge, Bernie Sanders, “proportional representation” and Kurt Cobain. Novoselic, long politically active, is a supporter of Citizens United, which paved the way for Super PAC funding for presidential candidates, and in the interview, the bassist criticized Sanders for his stance on political action committees (via Pitchfork). Novoselic had previously written about how the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision was “good for transparency in elections.”
“I think if Bernie Sanders gets elected, we might have Sanka. But that’s his charm: He’s the uncle who drinks Sanka,” Novoselic said, comparing the liberal candidate to instant coffee. “Bernie Sanders is cool. I’m concerned about the position he takes on Citizens United … You have someone like Bernie Sanders who stands in front of a crowd of 14,000 people and he’s disparaging the term ‘citizens united.’ Last I checked, citizens united – coming together – is a good thing.”
In May, Sanders criticized the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling, telling Face the Nation that, “If elected president, I will have a litmus test in terms of my nominee to be a Supreme Court justice and that nominee will say that they are going to overturn this disastrous Supreme Court decision.” While fellow Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton relies on a Super PAC, Sanders ardently refuses to utilize one for his campaign.
Also in the interview with Kennedy, Novoselic discussed the idea of “proportional representation,” talked about Lawrence Lessig and revealed that he sometimes still has dreams about Cobain. “I do. And it’s beautiful. It’s just loving,” Novoselic said of his dreams. “You know when you lose somebody and you see them in a dream and you just feel all this love? It’s nice.”
