Aziz Ansari, Eric Wareheim Reimagine ‘Master of None’ as Wacky Sitcom
Aziz Ansari and Eric Wareheim co-star as deadpan buddy robots in Big Bud Lil’ Bud, a deliberately cheesy sitcom teaser Wareheim posted on YouTube. Wareheim joked that this “unused CBS pilot” was the “original inspiration for Master of None,” Ansari’s acclaimed Netflix comedy series.
The four-minute clip boasts a surrealistic Adult Swim feel, poking fun at parody-ripe sitcom tropes that populated 1990s shows like Full House. Wareheim and Ansari play the titular buddies, two oddly smiley humanoids whose father died in a car crash and was reincarnated as a puppy. Like any cheesy sitcom of that era, the show features a generic opening theme song and credits montage (featuring shots of the duo feeding ducks and spraying silly string).
Wareheim and Ansari – appearing under the aliases “Jeremy Kuhar” and “Kenneth R. Ballendir,” respectively – open the story sitting in front of a pile of bananas, which they must eat as a punishment. “I told ya – should have just taken the spanking,” Wareheim says, backed by an explosive laugh track.
Earlier this week, Ansari tweeted that Master of None had been picked up for a second season, set to premiere sometime in 2017.
