Watch Yo Gotti, Travis Barker Perform ‘Down in the DM’ on ‘Kimmel’
Yo Gotti dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday to perform his hit single “Down in the DM.” For the appearance, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker accompanied the rapper, providing live hi-hat and snares on the social media-inspired track.
Although widely respected in hip-hop and a rap pillar in his native Memphis, Gotti – who released his debut album in 1996 – has finally found mainstream success with “Down in the DM.” As the 34-year-old rapper recently told Rolling Stone, he actually learned how to use direct messages while recording the track.
“One of my partners was giving me the ins and outs of Snapchat while the producer Ben [Billion$] was making the music from scratch,” Gotti said. “He only had the drums and the snare and the hi-hat. We were just sitting there in our own world, but you can hear the music still, and my homie’s telling me how to message and how you can’t screenshot people. Then he showed me the DMs. I really just not too long ago put [the app] on my phone, and I immediately had — I don’t even know how many, a lot of DMs! As I’m going through ’em, I’m seein’ a lot of, ‘Wow!'”
Gotti’s The Art of Hustle, which features “Down in the DM,” is out now.
