Watch Flaming Lips Split Into Warring Bands in ‘Portlandia’ Teaser
For music fans, nothing is more annoying than when an iconic band splits into two rival factions. That’s the scenario in a new Portlandia teaser, which finds psych-rock veterans the Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne leading his own solo project, “the Flaming Lips Featuring Wayne Coyne,” while his former bandmates operate as “More Flaming Lips.”
The clip finds those feuding groups attempting to check into Portland’s Pickathon Music Festival, where Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein play two annoyed staff members. The comedic duo can’t figure out the proper laminate situation, leading to a chaotic scene where the bands argue their musical credentials. “They graduated from the Berklee School of Music,” Coyne says, hyping his psychedelic posse, to which “former” Lips member Steven Drozd interjects, “learning my chords!”
As the confusion escalates, the bands’ mutual lawyer (played by comedy writer John Levenstein) walks up and aims to straighten out the situation – “maybe in the shade” because of the heat and the after-effects of a “bad nap.”
Louis C.K., Danzig, Jillian Bell, Robert Smigel are among the other notable guests for Portlandia‘s sixth season, which premieres Thursday, January 21st at 10 p.m. ET/PT on IFC.
