Watch Kaleo Storm Nashville Record Plant in First ‘Vinyl’ Soundtrack Video
The new HBO show Vinyl is an NYC-steeped time capsule. So it’s a bit of a surprise that the first video from the Martin Scorsese–Mick Jagger show’s official soundtrack features Kaleo, an up-and-coming band from Iceland, rocking out in a Nashville record-pressing plant. The clip for “No Good” finds the quartet dropping by United Record Pressing — the largest vinyl-pressing facility in the U.S. — where they set up and give a sweaty in-the-round performance of their gritty, Jack White–esque blues-rock anthem.
“We were so thrilled to be included on the Vinyl soundtrack, and making this video for ‘No Good’ was a blast,” Kaleo guitarist-singer JJ Julius Son told Rolling Stone. “We shot it at United Record Press in Nashville. When we heard about Vinyl, we loved the vibe and jumped at the chance to contribute to it. As a huge fan of both Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese, it’s an honor for me personally to be a part of project that they’ve created.”
“When we were looking for new songs for the Vinyl soundtrack, Kaleo immediately stood out,” Atlantic Records executive and Vinyl soundtrack co-producer Kevin Weaver told RS. “From the first listen, I thought the driving guitar riffs and gritty vocal style on ‘No Good’ were a perfect fit, and also seemed like an ideal candidate to pitch for the trailers and TV spots, even though they were a brand new band to most U.S. listeners.”
Vinyl: Music From the HBO Original Series is out today, February 12th. In addition to Kaleo’s “No Good,” the soundtrack features a song by the Nasty Bits, the fictional band featured in the show and fronted by Mick Jagger’s son, James; an original series theme by Sturgill Simpson; Seventies classics from Otis Redding, Foghat and the Edgar Winter Group; and much more. Vinyl premieres on HBO February 14th.
