Skrillex Channels ‘Epic Rap Battles’ in Trippy, Animated ‘Squad Out’ Video
Skrillex and Los Angeles producer Jauz take a terrifying trip on an intergalactic elevator in the new, animated video for “Squad Out!,” their 2015 Adult Swim single featuring Fatman Scoop.
The clip finds Skrillex and Jauz trapped in an elevator with a mind of its own that takes them to a handful of new dimensions before finally opening its doors to one with Fatman Scoop and his posse — just in time for the first bass drop. The already strange animation grows even more surreal as Scoop and his cavalcade crash the elevator between two planets, send it out into space and put Skrillex and Jauz through the neon-lit wringer.
Red Bull Music debuted the Adam Fuchs-directed clip (Flying Lotus, Todd Rundgren, the Hold Steady). Fuchs said the clip was partially inspired by a peculiar moment he experienced after waking up from a nap to a late-night talk show on his TV.
“They were airing a bit that had a fake Skrillex battle-rapping with Mozart and I was so exhausted, I didn’t quite know what I was watching,” Fuchs said. “It was one of the weirdest and most confusing things I’ve seen in a long time. I knew at that moment, I had to make something that could be viewed in the same way I saw that skit. I hope I accomplished that.”
The “Squad Out!” video is also set to air on Adult Swim’s Toonami block, starting March 12th at 3 a.m.
