Watch John Oliver Annihilate Donald Trump, Re-Brand ‘Drumpf’
It’s time to get serious about Donald Trump. As John Oliver noted on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, “Since 1988, every candidate who’s won the most states on Super Tuesday went on to become their party’s nominee.” Or in funnier terms: “At this point, Donald Trump is America’s back mole: it may have seemed harmless a year ago, but now that it’s gotten frighteningly bigger, it is no longer wise to ignore it.”
Oliver’s Trump takedown begins with words from his supporters, who hype his business acumen, “aggressive” campaigning, self-funding and ability to “tell it like it is.” The host then breaks down how each of those claims is dubious.
The host cites Politifact, who checked 77 of the Republican’s statements and rated 76 percent of them as “varying degrees of false.” The comedian also takes aim at Trump’s various failed business ventures, including Trump University, Trump Steaks and a mortgage company he started in 2006 – shortly before the housing market collapse. “Even when you can demonstrably prove Trump to be wrong, it doesn’t seem to matter,” Oliver says. “You can hold his feet to the fire, but he’ll just stand there on the stumps, bragging about his fireproof foot skin.”
Oliver argues that many Trump supporters have been bewitched by the candidate’s prominent brand – his name associated with quality and success. But according to one biographer, that’s not even the Republican’s real last name, as a “prescient ancestor” changed it from the less catchy “Drumpf.”
“If you are thinking of voting for Donald Trump, the charismatic guy promising to ‘Make America Great Again,’ stop and take a moment to imagine how you’d feel if you’d just met a guy named Donald Drumpf: a litigious serial liar with a string of broken business ventures and the support of a former Klan leader whom he can’t decide whether or not to condemn,” Oliver says.
The host closes by unveiling his expansive “Make Donald Drumpf Again” campaign, which includes a “Donald Drumpf” Chrome web browser extension and parody hats, both available at DonaldJDrumpf.com.
