Watch the Raid on El Chapo’s Compound
The government of Mexico has released video footage of the raid on Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera’s hideout in the Sinaloan city of Los Mochis.
The operation, conducted by the Mexican Navy in the early hours of Friday morning, left five of El Chapo’s associates dead and one Mexican Marine wounded.
The footage, obtained by CNN affiliate Televisa, is 50 minutes long. The network has so far broadcast just 30 seconds of the video, which shows the firefight between Marines and cartel members.
Flashes of gunfire can be seen before the injured soldier is heard yelling, “They got me. They got me.” Later, the camera shows the soldiers hunkered down, lobbing grenades into the two-story home.
CNN’s Rafael Romo translated the video on CNN Monday. “You hear the soldiers saying, ‘Let the grenades loose,’ and they start launching grenades into the adjacent rooms in the house,” he said.
After all that, Guzmán nearly got away. In the video, Romo explains, “you see the soldiers going room-by-room, essentially clearing the house. By then El Chapo had already escaped through a manhole.”
Guzmán slipped out of the house and into the city’s sewer system. He emerged, and managed to steal a car, before he was detained by federal police.
