Watch Billy Joel, Fallon Sing Doo-Wop on ‘The Longest Time’
Every time Billy Joel visits Jimmy Fallon‘s Tonight Show, the results are both hammy and memorable. On Wednesday, Joel’s fun visit spilled into the commercial breaks, with the singer’s massive band leading Fallon and actor J.K. Simmons through a rousing version of his 1983 doo-wop classic, “The Longest Time.”
The rag-tag a cappella group hit some awkward spots – mainly with Fallon giggling his way through a lead vocal on the second verse – but their chemistry is impressive, especially Simmons’ deft handling of the bass parts.
Elsewhere in the episode, Fallon and Joel teamed up for another loose, intimate performance, recruiting the Roots to back them on the Rolling Stones’ soulful staple “Beast of Burden.” Naturally, the host had ample opportunity to show off his well-honed Mick Jagger imitation.
During Joel’s March 2014 Tonight Show appearance, the duo teamed for another doo-wop performance, tag-teaming “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” with help from an iPad.
