Arianna Huffington Says Trump Needs More Sleep to Be Less Dumb
Arianna Huffington says we’re in a current “sleep-deprivation crisis,” and she’s touring the country to make sure to spread her message that we all need to unplug from our smartphones and get more (and better) sleep to improve the quality of our daily lives. The co-founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post has made it her mission to take on the cause, and in her new book The Sleep Revolution, she shares the research that supports the claim that lack of sleep can be as detrimental to one’s health as binge drinking and drug use for high school and college students and can wreck your sex life and more if you’re not careful.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Huffington also talks about how presidential candidates are obvious examples of the negative effects of sleep deprivation, stating “Donald Trump is exhibit A,” adding that the symptoms are there for everyone to see: “mood swings, inability to process information, paranoid tendencies to believe things that are not true.”
“I think statements like ‘women who have abortions should be punished,’ which have to be retracted, are very damaging to his campaign,” Huffington says. “Many politicians and candidates have said it’s when they are tired that they make their bigger mistakes. We saw it with Bill Clinton as he admitted, we saw it with Marco Rubio, whose performance during that disastrous debate could not be explained.”
Huffington has no qualms about calling out Trump for his deficiencies, but she sees one silver lining to his caustic behavior. “His greatest contribution to American politics may be as a reminder to the dangers of sleep deprivation.”
