ELP’s Carl Palmer Plots Tribute Tour for Late Keyboardist Keith Emerson
Emerson, Lake and Palmer drummer Carl Palmer will pay tribute to the group’s late keyboardist, Keith Emerson, on his upcoming North American tour with the ELP Legacy band.
Palmer was already planning a tour to celebrate his 50th year in music, but changed its focus after Emerson took his own life on March 11th. The pair co-founded the seminal British prog rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer with Greg Lake in 1970.
Palmer’s summer tour begins June 2nd at the B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in New York City and wraps July 12th at Poor David’s in Dallas. Palmer and the ELP Legacy band will also host a special show June 24th at Miami’s Olympia Theater, “Pictures at an Exhibition — A Tribute To Keith Emerson,” which will feature special guests and performances from the Center for Contemporary Dance.
“I had wanted to marry the music of ELP with a contemporary dance interpretation for quite a while,” Palmer said in a statement. “Originally, this event had been scheduled to be a celebration of my 50th year in music and I had invited Keith to come and participate in this and other special events that had been planned in 2016. He told us he was interested, but sadly, fate intercepted these plans. I felt it was imperative that we turn this event into a tribute to him and the music we made together.”
Tickets for “Pictures at an Exhibition” and the rest of the ELP Legacy band’s tour are on sale now via Palmer’s website. The concerts will feature Palmer and his group playing new arrangements of famed ELP instrumentals, as well as songs composed by others. The tour will also boast special art events featuring Palmer’s work, which will be sold to benefit local charities. A complete list of dates is below.
