Hear Jack White’s Theme for Maya Rudolph, Martin Short Variety Series
Jack White has penned and produced a funky instrumental theme song for Maya Rudolph and Martin Short‘s new NBC variety show, Maya and Marty.
Along with White — who handles drums on the track — the Maya and Marty theme features Third Man Records musicians Dean Fertita on organ, Dominic Davis on bass, Fats Kaplin on pedal steel guitar and Lillie Mae Rische, who lays down the cut’s charming, wah-wah warped guitar. The Maya and Marty theme marks the first time White has written music for a TV show.
Maya and Marty premieres tonight, May 31st, on NBC at 10 p.m. ET. The program was borne out of Rudolph’s one-off variety show, The Maya Rudolph Show, which aired in 2014. The new series will feature the two Saturday Night Live alums participating in sketches and musical numbers alongside celebrity guests. At SNL‘s 40th anniversary show, Short and Rudolph (as Beyoncé) delivered a ridiculous duet honoring the show’s many memorable music moments.
As for White, the musician has remained busy since he wrapped touring behind his 2014 album, Lazaretto. Along with releasing a new Dead Weather album, Dodge and Burn, in 2015, White recently covered Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” for the season finale of ABC’s The Muppets and co-wrote “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” off Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
