Dave Mustaine, Black Sabbath’s Bill Ward Talk Scott Weiland
The rock & roll community continues to remember Scott Weiland, with former Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward the latest to pay tribute to the Stone Temple Pilots singer. On Ward’s Rock 50 show on Cerritos College, California’s WPMD, the drummer talked about meeting Weiland and praised the singer’s abilities.
“I knew Scott and I met him on and off for a number of years. And I met him, actually, when he was quite young, and I found him to be one heck of a guy, to say the least. He was one hell of a singer,” Ward said (via Blabbermouth). “And I was really taken aback by the fact that he passed away. And it’s always sad when we lose a fellow musician that was active in rock & roll.” Video of Ward discussing Weiland begins around three minutes in in the below video.
Ward then played Velvet Revolver‘s “Can’t Get It Out of My Head” on Rock 50, which was followed by Queen‘s “The Show Must Go On.” “We want to make sure that we send our condolences to his family and thank Scott for all the music,” he added. “When I was trying to put the show together, I [thought] ‘What the blazes do you play after that? This is a real sad event that’s happened.’ The only band and person I could think of was Queen.”
Ward is the second rocker in recent weeks to pay tribute to Weiland on their radio show: Nikki Sixx similarly remembered his encounters with the Stone Temple Pilots singer and revealed that Weiland died in the same tour bus room that Sixx occupied during the recent U.S. leg of Mötley Crüe’s Final Tour.
Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine also talked about Weiland in an interview with Loudwire, where the heavy metal legend stated that his tinkering of Stone Temple Pilots’ set list during an early Nineties tour helped propel the band to stardom. Mustaine also said that he shared some crucial advice with the singer when STP was on the cusp of fame, but Weiland didn’t listen.
“The thing that I regret was at the end of the tour, I told him, I said, ‘Look, Scott, you’re going to be huge. You’re going to have money, you’re going to have drugs, you’re going to have pussy, and it’s going to be everywhere,'” Mustaine said. “And I said, ‘If you do anything, stay away from heroin.’ And I probably should have said, ‘Do as much as you can,’ because he did the exact opposite.”
