Gwen Stefani Enlists George Clooney, Julia Roberts for ‘Carpool Karaoke’
Gwen Stefani sat shotgun with James Corden for an extended session of “Carpool Karaoke” on The Late Late Show Wednesday that included two bonus passengers: Money Monster co-stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts.
Within minutes of picking up Stefani, Corden was able to drop a casual “No Doubt” into conversation, kicking off a round of songs that included the band’s “Don’t Speak” and Stefani solo hits “Sweet Escape,” “Used to Love You” and “Rich Girl.” In between songs, they spoke about Stefani’s fondness for emojis, and Corden had the singer act out various faces and actions like clapping hands, red lady in the dress, angry face, sidewise kiss and eggplant — the double meaning of which Corden then had to explain to Stefani.
“It’s the truth, as I call it; the prize,” Corden cracked.
“You know the name of my record?” Stefani asked cheekily. “This Is What the Truth Feels Like.”
Halfway through their ride, however, Corden realized he needed two more passengers to use the HOV +4 lane. In an act of desperation, he called up Clooney, who then corralled Roberts to take the final seat.
The newly formed quartet first busted out Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl,” after which Corden asked Clooney and Roberts to play the actor’s version of “Carpool Karaoke” by reciting some of their favorite movie lines. It also gave Corden the opportunity to make the entire car — save Clooney — “Aww!” with a recitation of his favorite Notting Hill quote. The segment then closed out with one final song: A bombastic version of Queen’s “We Are the Champions.”
