‘Full House’ Reboot Coming to Netflix
UPDATE: Original Full House cast member Dave Coulier will star in the show’s upcoming reboot Full House. Big Bang Theory director Mark Cendrowski will direct the new series.
The heavily rumored Full House reboot is officially happening on Netflix, as Uncle Jesse himself, John Stamos, confirmed Monday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The hit family sitcom will receive 13 new episodes that will premiere on the streaming service in 2016, according to Variety.
Dubbed, naturally, Fuller House, Stamos said the premise of the new show will be a reversal of the original, centering around Candace Cameron Bure’s character, D.J. Tanner. Tanner will play a pregnant, recently widowed veterinarian with two boys: a rebellious 12-year-old, J.D. and anxious 7-year-old, Max. In need of some assistance raising her sons, she moves back in with her younger sister, Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), now an aspiring musician, as well as her childhood friend, Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber), who also has a teenage daughter, Ramona.
“It’s a labor of love,” Stamos said on Kimmel. “We’ve been literally trying for so many years to do it right, and I think we’ve finally got it perfect.”
Stamos told Kimmel it was likely that Bob Saget, who played Full House patriarch Danny Tanner, would return; he added they were still in talks with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who split duties as Michelle Tanner. But never fear: “If we can’t get the Olsen twins,” Stamos told Kimmel, “we’re gonna dress you up.”
Along with Saget and the Olsens, Netflix is still in discussions with Full House stars Dave Coulier and Lori Loughlin about guest appearances. Stamos suggested at the very least they would be able to corral much of the original cast for the initial hour-long reunion special.
Full House ran for eight seasons on ABC between 1987 and 1994. Last year, Stamos, Saget and Coulier reunited for a Super Bowl commercial pushing Dannon’s Greek yogurt; the trio also made an appearance on The Tonight Show — where they doled out some fatherly advice to a fussing Jimmy Fallon — and got photobombed by Rihanna on Good Morning America.
