Watch Demi Lovato Deliver Powerhouse ‘Confident’ on ‘American Idol’
Demi Lovato brought fire and ice to the American Idol stage Thursday, performing two singles – “Confident” and “Stone Cold” – that explore polar opposite moods.
The singer opened a boisterous take on “Confident,” with several American Idol contestants chiming in with sassy asides and finger snaps. “What’s wrong with being complicated?” Lovato crooned, showing off her dizzying vocal ability with multiple melismatic runs.
But she toned down the brash vibe with a dynamic powerhouse take on “Stone Cold,” the third single from her 2015 LP, Confident. “God knows I tried to feel happy for you / Know that I am, even if I can’t understand,” she sang over muted piano chords. “I’ll take the pain / Give me the truth.”
Lovato will unite with friend and former Disney peer Nick Jonas for a joint summer tour, “The Future Now,” which launches June 24th in Sunrise, Florida and concludes in September.
After her American Idol performance, Lovato previewed the jaunt with host Ryan Seacrest, offering details both exciting and confusing. “We wanted to be extremely interactive with all of the fans, and that comes down to the performances but also the smell when you enter the arena,” she said. “Everything … And also we want to play new music, including me.”
