John Cena to Host the ESPYs
John Cena has certainly taken the whole “Hustle, Loyalty, Respect” thing to heart.
The tireless WWE star has just been announced as the host of the 24th annual ESPY Awards. It’s just the latest in a string of high-profile gigs for Cena, who made a memorable turn opposite Amy Schumer in last year’s Trainwreck, is heavily featured on E!’s Total Divas (and the upcoming spinoff, Total Bellas), occasionally shows up on the Today show and currently hosts the Fox reality competition American Grit.
About the only thing he hasn’t done lately is wrestle – Cena has been recovering from shoulder surgery, but showed up alongside the Rock at WrestleMania 32. He’s set to make a triumphant return to the WWE roster on the Memorial Day episode of WWE Raw.
“It goes without saying it’s a tremendous honor,” Cena said of his ESPYs gig. “The prestige of the show grows every year. It’s unbelievable. I obviously accepted, but it doesn’t go without its share of nerves. I just want to do the show justice. I’m going to do my due diligence and hopefully we can have a great show.”
Cena, who was nominated for ESPN‘s 2015 Sports Humanitarian of the Year Award in recognition of his work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, follows in the footsteps of previous hosts like Drake, Jon Hamm and Justin Timberlake. The 2016 ESPYs air live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET on July 13.
