Freakish Felines Face Off in Surreal ‘Meow the Jewels’ Video
Run the Jewels have released a surreal new video for “Meowpurrdy,” a track off their pioneering feline-based remix album Meow the Jewels that’s fittingly packed with an assortment of monstrous, psychedelic cats.
Animated by British artist Cyriak, the clip features a beastly, three-eyed cat, around which a kaleidoscopic collection of smaller cats gather, multiply and morph extra eyes, legs, tails and heads. This frightening feline, however, is no match for an angelic gray tabby, who descends from the sky and destroys the beast by being swallowed and coughed back up like an explosive hairball.
Run the Jewels, the rap duo of El-P and Killer Mike, offered Meow the Jewels for free last September, coming through on a year-long promise to remix their beloved 2014 LP Run the Jewels 2 using cat samples. The project was funded by a Kickstarter campaign and features an array of producers and guests including Prince Paul, the Alchemist, Snoop Dogg, Zola Jesus, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and even Internet celebrity cat Lil Bub (who appears on “Meowpurrdy”).
Killer Mike and El-P have donated all earnings from Meow the Jewels directly to the families of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, two high-profile victims of police brutality. Additional profits have gone to the National Lawyers Guild’s Mass Defense Committee.
