Watch Kristen Wiig, Fred Armisen Re-Dub ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’
Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen showcased their awkward comic chemistry on Thursday’s Late Night With Seth Meyers, re-dubbing the talk show for international audiences with improvised banter – in English. The entire concept makes no sense, which Meyers observes: “If I’m confused by anything – the show’s already in English. Why would you dub it into English, and also why would you change the words?” But Wiig argues that their dubbing provides “a different sensibility.” “You have to cater to people,” she says.
Wiig first highlights her solo voice talents, adding alternate dialogue over an old Late Night clip of Meyers warming up the crowd. “Alright, everybody, thanks for coming!” Wiig says. “Oh, look at this crowd!” The actress then recruits Armisen, her old SNL pal and Meyers’ current bandleader, to voice Helen Mirren and Shaquille O’Neal in interview clips. (Armisen’s Australian take on the NBA legend sounds like a bad impression of Crocodile Dundee.) “Listen to me – I’m the host,” Wiig says, as Meyers. “I know ya are,” fake O’Neal responds.
The hilarious bit recalls Wiig and Armisen’s long-running improv gag as musical duo Garth and Kat on SNL‘s “Weekend Update,” where the unprepared singers make up music and lyrics to their own songs in real-time.
Wiig is co-starring in the Paul Feig-directed, all-female Ghostbusters reboot alongside Melissa McCarthy and Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. The anticipated comedy – scheduled to hit theaters July 15th, 2016 – will feature cameos from original Ghostbusters Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.
