Watch Pusha T Debut Dark ‘Sunshine’ on ‘Daily Show’
Pusha T visited The Daily Show Tuesday to perform a pair of new tracks, “Sunshine” and his recently released “Crutches, Crosses, Caskets.” The politically minded “Sunshine” finds the Clipse rapper examining police brutality, race relations and network news coverage of the protests in Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri. The track – which features Jill Scott on the studio version – appears on the rapper’s “dark and scathing” King Push – Darkest Before the Dawn: The Prelude, due out Friday.
“These ain’t new problems, they just old ways / I see one time turn sunshine into Freddie Gray / Just another nigga dead, just another nigga dead,” Pusha T says on the track. Before even performing the song, the rapper posted the track’s verified lyrics on Genius, and even started annotating some of the lines, including “C-N-N, Don Lemon, no Kweli when you meet me,” a reference to Talib Kweli’s chaotic Ferguson interview with the CNN reporter.
“I’m talking about everything that’s going on in society: The Good, the bad and the ugly,” Pusha T, the new head of G.O.O.D. Music, told host Trevor Noah of his new LP. As a web exclusive, the rapper then launched into “Crutches, Crosses, Caskets.”
