Hear Duran Duran’s Melancholic New Song, ‘You Kill Me With Silence’
Duran Duran have unveiled another new song (via Daily Beast) from their upcoming 14th studio album, Paper Gods. Titled “You Kill Me With Silence,” the slow-burning, synth-led track finds singer Simon Le Bon attempting to break free of the emotional clutches of a femme fatale:
“You’re thin ice / I should be on solid ground,” Le Bon sings, adding, “But I remain / despite your deadly aim / to drive another lad insane.”
As the chorus hits, all the instruments drop out save for Nick Rhodes’ synths, as Le Bon sings, “You kill me with silence / that’s your style, girl / You’re letting me know / This deafening silence / The only reason that you’re in control.” The song climaxes with roughly one minute of fuzzy synth atmospherics, as Le Bon recites the title phrase.
“You Kill Me With Silence” is the second track to be unveiled from Paper Gods, following the release of the funky first single “Pressure Off.” In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Nick Rhodes said of the new album: “A lot of artists get into a comfort zone. They know what works. For us, that’s the least comfortable zone, the comfort zone. We like to torture ourselves a little bit.”
Duran Duran recorded Paper Gods in London with producers Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Josh Blair and Mr Hudson. The album features special guests Janelle Monáe (on “Pressure Off”), former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante (on “What are the Chances,” “Butterfly Girl,” “The Universe Alone,” and “Northern Lights”), Canadian Juno-Award winning singer Kiesza (on “Last Night in the City”), Mr Hudson (on “Paper Gods”), Mew vocalist Jonas Bjerre (on “Change The Skyline”), violinist Davidé Rossi (on “Face For Today” and “Pressure Off”) and actress Lindsay Lohan, who provides a spoken-word vocal on “Danceophobia.”
