See Flaming Lips’ Trippy ‘Space Oddity’ Video
The Flaming Lips have unveiled their video for “Space Oddity.” For the clip, the band performed the David Bowie classic in an Oklahoma City church to a congregation of white balloons, with the group turning the house of worship into a vivid laser light show.
The video for their spacey, bass-heavy (courtesy of longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann) cover also features a pair of nuns mourning a death as they bring flowers to a graveyard. As Wayne Coyne described the video on Instagram, “It has 2 nuns in it… One is very sad and her friend helps her through it.” The nun helps out her sad friend with the assistance of some colorful, happiness-inducing pills.
In addition to the video, the Flaming Lips have also released “Space Oddity” as a single-track download on iTunes. The group first covered the track during an eight-song Bowie tribute they performed February in Aspen.
The Flaming Lips were originally scheduled to perform their rendition of “Space Oddity” on the March 30th episode of the Late Show With Stephen Colbert when the band was in New York for the Music of David Bowie tributes. However, that performance was bumped to make room for last-minute guest Senator Elizabeth Warren, NewsOK reported in late March. The Flaming Lips will instead take the Ed Sullivan Theatre stage on April 19th.
