Watch the Riveting ‘True Detective’ Season Two Teaser
UPDATE: True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto told Medium that he has removed the occult element to the show’s second season. “That was a comment from very early in the process, and something I ended up discarding in favor of closer character work and a more grounded crime story,” he said. “The complexity of the historical conspiracy first conceived detracted from the characters and their reality, I felt, and those characters are ultimately what have to shape the world and story.”
True Detective will return for its highly anticipated second season on June 21st, and to whet appetites, HBO has released the show’s first teaser, which finds new cast members Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch offering up their interpretations of Rust Cohle’s patented time-is-a-flat-circle stare.
The teaser doesn’t offer any dialogue or specific plot points, but does provide a series of intense, silent clips set to a somber, simple song. Among the most riveting moments are McAdams leading a team of police officers through a house, Kitsch punching out a bystander Tim Riggins-style and Farrell slipping on a pair of brass knuckles which he promptly puts to good use.
In classic True Detective fashion, the teaser closes with a shot of an unknown person slipping on a black ski mask, turning to the camera and putting his index finger to his lips as if to say, “Shh.”
Season Two of True Detective centers around a murder that brings together three Los Angeles-area police officers — McAdams’ Ventura County Sheriff’s detective Ani Bezzerides, Farrell’s detective Ray Velcoro and Kitsch’s Paul Woodrugh, a California Highway Patrol cop. Vince Vaughn will also star as career criminal Frank Semyon. It’s Woodrugh who ostensibly uncovers the crime scene, prompting an investigation that, as it unravels, involves various law-enforcement agencies, criminal collusions and billions of dollars.
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto penned all eight episodes of the show’s second season, while Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) directed the first two. HBO has yet to reveal the directors of the remaining six episodes.
