See Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood Read ‘Mean Tweets’ on ‘Kimmel’
After the 49th CMA Awards telecast concluded on ABC, the party continued with the network’s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel putting a country spin on his popular “Mean Tweets” segment. More than a dozen of the genre’s stars proved they’re able to laugh (or in Darius Rucker’s case, giggle) at themselves even as they read some nasty — and often hilarious — Twitter posts targeting their music, careers and even their looks.
Reigning two-time Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan was up first, reading a message that cut him off at the knees: “You ever gotten so drunk you said a Luke Bryan song actually wasn’t that bad? Me neither.” Rucker’s uncontrollable giggles came after he read a tweet that not only misspelled his name but insulted him further: “Some of my best friends are black, but Darrius rucker sucks ass.”
Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox couldn’t help from laughing either. As the trio’s Jay DeMarcus read the tweet directed at the group, complete with pithy hashtags, LeVox doubled over in hysterics. “Rascal Flatts, please do us all a favor and stop making music you are so awful. #sobad #spareus #soundsofdeath.”
Even the CMAs’ co-hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood weren’t immune, with Paisley remaining straight-faced as he read a particularly scatological tweet theorizing how his first album was created.
Other tweets had the embarrassment of Tim McGraw’s new song being compared to “your mom finding your penis pump.” (“Reggie, you need to move out, man!” McGraw told the messenger), one questioning why Kacey Musgraves looks like the house band at Chili’s, and some especially vulgar, straight-to-the-point insults directed at Jake Owen and Chris Young.
While it’s hard to know what to make of Dan + Shay’s reaction to their tweet, which suggested they share more than just a musical partnership, 82-year-old Willie Nelson had a classic comeback for a jab that read, “Marijuana works wonders. Just look at Willie Nelson. Bastard is still alive and won’t die.” “You got it!” he replied, breaking out into a wide grin.
