Watch Aubrie Sellers’ Attitude-Heavy ‘Light of Day’ on ‘Colbert’
In support of today’s release of New City Blues, Aubrie Sellers made her television debut Thursday night on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert, turning in a guitar-heavy version of one of the LP’s standout tracks, “Light of Day.”
Sellers infused the already dark tune with some of the same punk-edged attitude found throughout her debut album, adding extra snarl to the hook line, “Now I know what they mean when they say/sure gets dark before the light of day.”
Sellers is the daughter of country vocalist Lee Ann Womack, who, as a proud parent, has been promoting the release of New City Blues and her daughters’ appearances via Twitter. “I feel like going door to door selling this like we did Girl Scout cookies! Yall get it!” she tweeted earlier this week. Another of her tweets read, “I’m so proud. But I still expect you to be at family dinner tonight.”
Sellers penned “Light of Day” with Adam Wright, her co-writer on half of New City Blues‘ 14 tracks, and it’s one of their first collaborations.
“We wrote it in 2012, so it’s been four years,” Sellers tells Rolling Stone Country. “That was the first song we thought was something. Both of our musical worlds came together. I thought, ‘This is awesome, we need to keep doing this.’ I was inspired.”
The pair also wrote the bluesy “Sit Here and Cry,” which is accompanied by a video recently shot at Springwater, one of Nashville’s oldest bars.
New City Blues is available now at iTunes. Sellers is set to play Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium next month, opening for Chris Stapleton.
