Snoop Dogg, Aloe Blacc Want You to Divest From the Gun Industry
Snoop Dogg, Aloe Blacc and Los Angeles Clippers forward Matt Barnes are among the numerous entertainers, athletes and tech leaders supporting the “#ImUnloading” movement, which calls for individuals with 401Ks to divest from the gun industry. The campaign is a partnership between Unload Your 401K and anti-violence movement No Guns Allowed.
“How I’ve been affected by gun violence over the years is through deaths of friends and family members and associates,” says Snoop Dogg in the above PSA. Barnes, Blacc and others also share their personal stories about gun violence, encouraging viewers to spread their experiences and raise awareness with the hashtag #ImUnloading.
“Every American is at risk of gun violence, but we all can also be part of the solution,” says tech leader Ron Conway in a statement. “I am reaching out to my entire network to encourage companies of every size to divest their retirement portfolios from the gun industry.”
Twenty children are admitted to American hospitals with gunshot wounds every day. The campaign hopes that individuals, by removing investments to the gun industry, will “hit the gun industry where it matters most: their wallet.”
“There is a straight line from gun industry investment to gun industry profits to funding of the NRA,” adds Jennifer Fiore, executive director of Campaign to Unload. “Half the value of these companies comes from mutual funds and most of the ‘investors’ in these funds have no idea they are inadvertently part of the problem. Now they can be part of the solution.”
