Soundgarden to Issue Rarities Box Set ‘Echo of Miles’ on Vinyl
Soundgarden will put out a vinyl edition of their 2014 box set, Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path, on May 19th with unique art. The compilation collects more than a quarter century’s worth of hard-to-find songs, including several previously unreleased recordings.
Guitarist Kim Thayil handpicked the track list for the compilation. As with the CD edition, the six-LP collection will be broken into three categories, including original songs – spanning B sides, compilation tracks and other rarities like their previously unreleased 1988 jam “Twin Tower” – cover versions – featuring their versions of songs by everyone from Black Sabbath to Cheech and Chong – and “oddities,” consisting of instrumentals, demos and remixes. The vinyl edition groups the categories into double-LPs that will be housed in three separate jackets with unique art and a slipcase wrapped in foil paper with art by Soundgarden collaborator Josh Graham.
Thayil tells Rolling Stone the group has always oriented themselves toward vinyl. “By the time Superunknown came out, the record company was hesitant to put out vinyl, and we were like, ‘No, no. We’re vinyl guys. This is the way we came up. We’ve got to release Superunknown on vinyl,'” he says. “So, of course, it’s a double-album and so is Down on the Upside and King Animal.”
He also makes it clear that the material on Echo of Miles is not just a collection of odds and ends. “We write and record a bunch of songs, but we’re limited to the space available, time-wise on an album,” he says. “So when we make CDs, we go, ‘Here are these 10 or 11 songs that are going to make the album and here are these other songs that the record company is going to use on international releases or maybe B-sides for singles.’
“To us, it’s a drag because we love these songs,” Thayil added. “We recorded them. We learned them. We tracked them. These are as valuable as anything else that we put on the record. That’s what Echo of Miles addresses. Some reviewers might hear it as outtakes or simply B sides, but these are Soundgarden songs that were never present on a Soundgarden album.”
The box set is available for preorder now.
