Mets Superfan Jim Breuer on World Series Game 3: ‘Keeping the War Alive’
With the New York Mets down two games to none to the Kansas City Royals in the World Series, superfan Jim Breuer was feeling down about his team’s championship prospects, saying the Mets were “done.” However, following the day off Thursday, the comedian is seeing things more optimistically as the series shifted to the Mets’ home park of Citi Field for Friday night’s Game 3.
“I have this bizarre calm, and I have this feeling they’re gonna sweep the Royals at home,” Breuer admitted in the latest Fandemonium dispatch on his way to take a water taxi with Mets legend Mike Piazza to Game 3. Along the way, Breuer also runs into Howard Stern Show producer and fellow diehard Mets fan Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate.
After a celebratory first inning where Mets captain David Wright busted a slump with a two-run home run in his first home World Series plate appearance, the mood quickly turns despondent as the Royals answered right back in the top of the next inning to retake the lead. “This Royals team, they hit everything, I mean everything,” Breuer says. “Can’t they just let us have a little fun?”
However, the fun began next inning as a Curtis Granderson two-run “dinger” gave the Mets a lead they would not relinquish. The offensive floodgates would eventually tear open for the Mets on their way to a resounding 9-3 victory. “Keeping the war alive,” Breuer exclaims at the end of Game 3. “That’s one! … The Mets are alive! We’re not dead yet!”
The party continues Saturday night in Flushing as the Mets take on the Royals in Game 4, with Long Island’s own Steven Matz on the mound for the home team.
